Weekly Practice

FOURTH SUNDAY IN LENT: Telling the Truth

Scripture: John 3:14-21

LYING IS ONE of the ways we hide from the light that exposes us. Of course, we don’t usually call it lying; we call it fudging, or exaggerating, or maybe a white lie. This week, make it a practice to tell the truth in every circumstance. If someone asks if you’ve read such-and-such, don’t pretend that you have. If you simply forget to call someone back, don’t make up an excuse about why you didn’t. When someone asks for your opinion, respond with tactful honesty, or decline to answer. If you find this practice diffcult, use it as an opportunity to talk to Jesus about your tendency to lie. Ask him to help you see why this has become part of your habit of speech, and listen for his words of forgiveness, healing, and transformation.
