THIRD SUNDAY AFTER THE EPIPHANY: Spend Time Among the Poor

Scripture: Luke 4:14-21

WE LOVE THE words of Isaiah 61, and we love that Jesus says he is their fulfillment: good news for the poor, captives set free, the blind able to see. But for many of us who are not poor or imprisoned, it can be hard to identify just what those actions might look like today. What is good news for the poor? How do the oppressed get free? This week, go out of your way to spend time among those who know what it means to be poor or oppressed. If you’re not sure where to go, consider a homeless shelter, the courthouse or county jail, a recovery ministry, or a restaurant or hangout on the “other side” of town. If you know someone connected to one of these communities, ask that person to be your guide. While there, remember that your task is not to fix anyone but to learn from your neighbors. What does good news look like for them? How would they experience freedom, or how are they experiencing freedom? Invite Jesus to make his words come alive in new ways in you.

Have a blessed week!
