Weekly Practice

PRACTICING THE LORD’S PRAYER
Contemplating Forgiveness

Scripture: “And forgive us our sins, as we have forgiven those who sin against us.” (Matthew 6:12)

CONTEMPLATION, OR IMAGINATIVE prayer, allows us to engage in conversation with Jesus as we imagine ourselves in the words of Scripture. This week, contemplate a story Jesus told about forgiveness. Set aside at least thirty minutes for this practice as you follow the pattern below. When you are finished, write down any insights you gained.

  • Begin by asking the Holy Spirit to lead you through this practice.
  • Read Matthew 18:21—33 slowly at least two times.
  • Imagine the scene and characters of the story as if you were there yourself. Take time to enter into the emotions of the servant whose debt was forgiven:
    • What experience of forgiveness has given you freedom?
    • What thoughts, emotions, or questions rise up in you?
    • Who is indebted to you, and how do you feel toward that person?
  • After you have personally identified with the truth of the story, imagine yourself next to Jesus, and talk to him about what you have experienced.
  • Ask Jesus to help you know the fullness of forgiveness you have received, and to whom you need to extend forgiveness.

Have a blessed week!
