Weekly Practice
FAITHFULNESS, GENTLENESS & SELF-CONTROL
Praying the Daily Examen
ST. IGNATIUS, A fifteenth-century priest and the founder of the Jesuits, taught the Daily Examen as a way of praying in order to recognize God’s presence and activity in our lives. Over time this practice grows our awareness of God, and we recognize the gift of God’s awesome, abiding faithfulness. The more we experience God’s faithfulness to us, the more we grow in our desire and capacity to be faithful as well. To practice the Examen this week, set aside three to five minutes at the same time every day. It may be helpful to use a journal to jot down your observations as you pray.
- Ask the Holy Spirit to help you see the last twenty-four hours as God sees them.
- Focus on the day’s gifts and give thanks for them.
- What invitations or opportunities did God give you? Notice any moments of strong emotion as clues to God’s activity and your response.
- Ask the Spirit to guide you to one particular event or emotion of the day that is important, and pray repentance, gratitude, or a request/petition accordingly.
- As you look toward the next day, ask specifically for what you need.
Have a blessed week!
