Sermon Title: “The Unexpected in the Wilderness”

Weekly Practice

FOURTH SUNDAY IN LENT
Contemplation/Imaginative Prayer

Scripture: John 9:1-41

WE MAY NOT be able to see Jesus with our eyes, but we can see him in our imagination, our mind’s eye. With the Spirit to guide us, we can enter into conversations with Jesus as Scripture prompts our imagination. Set aside at least twenty minutes for this practice so you will not be distracted or interrupted.

  • First, ask the Holy Spirit to guide your imagination.
  • Read all of John 9 slowly, perhaps choosing an unfamiliar version so you’re not tempted to skim overfamiliar words. It often helps to read out loud.
  • As you read, allow the words to create pictures in your mind, and ask Jesus to show himself to you.
  • When you see him, pause to reflect on the image without hurrying. What expression do you see on his face? What is he doing? Who else is there?
  • Ask questions as they arise, and listen for how Jesus responds.
  • Write down anything you want to remember from this conversation. Reflect on the ways your eyes were opened as you talked with Jesus.

Have a blessed week!
